Florence Nightingale

History's Maid tell the fabulous story of Florence Nightingale, her nursing career and the role she played in the Crimean War.

Learn all about Florence's early years, her childhood experiences of nursing and setting up animal hospitals and her parents disapproval of her career choice.

Born into a wealthy family, Florence Nightingale spent the summers of her early years at Leahurst in Holloway.  She learnt languages, history and philosophy, but loved maths most of all.  As a teenager she was presented to Queen Victoria and travelled Europe, but her calling was to become a nurse, much to her families dismay...

Hear ‘Florence’ talk about her time at the Scutari Hospital during the Crimean War and learn how she changed the role of nursing forever.

In 1854 Britain and France went to war with Russia in the Crimea, the terrible hospital conditions for the wounded soldiers became a source of public outcry and Florence Nightingale was called up to lead a team of nurses to work at the hospital in Scutari - the work she did there is legendary and made her a household name, even 150 years later.

This second video will be available to view on 12 May which was Florence's birthday.
