Wheels For All

Chesterfield Borough Council have partnered Derbyshire Sport and Chesterfield School Sport Partnership to establish Chesterfield Wheels for All hub. Local cycling business Wheely Fun Wheels will manage the centre and provide instructors. All the partners have worked closely with Cycling Projects from Warrington, nationally recognised providers of cycling centres for people with disabilities.

The hub is located in the Queen's Park in Chesterfield, adjacent to the leisure centre. A route has been identified and approved to use, including the old cycle race track around the cricket pitch. More able riders will be able to access the Hipper Valley and Holmebrook Valley Trails that run alongside the Queen's Park.

Wheely Fun Wheels experienced staff run the centre and provide training and guidance on using the bikes. They can train to Bikeability Level 1 and 2 standard if required or simply help riders to get mobile under their own power! Wheely Fun Wheels already deliver Bikeability training to over 1,500 children per year in NE Derbyshire and balance bike training to younger children in Chesterfield, together with a range of other cycling activities.

There are a range of bikes for disabilities and SEN suitable for both children and adults and an initial discussion with the staff will ensure riders get the best experience. Handcycles, wheelchair carrying bikes and 4-wheeled bikes are just some of those available.

Initially the hub is open on Fridays, although it is possible to book other days with two weeks' notice. At the weekend the hub will be open for ad hoc hire of the machines by riders and carers who have attended induction training.

For more information see the Wheely Fun Wheels website or contact 01246 520820.

Andrea from WaistWise, a fantastic health scheme scheme managed through Derbyshire Health promotion, presented Michelle from Wheels for All with a shiny new bike for their cycling hub based at Queen's Park. A very generous donation from a WaistWise competition winner who, unable to use it himself, wanted to ensure it got the best possible use by as many people as possible!
