Health and Safety Executive (HSE) responsibilities

HSE is responsible for enforcing health and safety at workplaces including:

  • building sites
  • central and local government premises
  • factories
  • fairgrounds
  • farms
  • gas, electricity and water systems
  • hospitals and nursing homes
  • mines
  • offshore installations
  • schools and colleges

Report a problem to the Health and Safety Executive.


Chesterfield Borough Council responsibilities

We deal with enforcing health and safety at the following type of premises:

  • hairdressers, barbers and beauty salons
  • hotels
  • leisure premises
  • museums (privately owned)
  • nurseries and playgroups
  • offices (except government offices)
  • places of worship
  • pubs and clubs
  • restaurants and takeaways
  • sheltered accommodation and care homes
  • shops and warehouses

We enforce health and safety legislation in approximately 1,700 premises. Our aim is to protect people at work and those who may be affected by work activities by securing compliance with health and safety legislation by:

  • carrying out health and safety inspections
  • investigating accidents and dangerous occurrences reported to us
  • investigating complaints
  • providing advice and guidance on health and safety
  • undertaking initiatives to raise awareness on health and safety issues

Council housing repairs and complaints

The health and safety team are unable to deal with health and safety concerns in council housing properties, these can be reported to repair.requests@chesterfield.gov.uk or via the request a repair page.
