Chesterfield Borough Council is required by law to have a health and safety policy, in compliance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
Our corporate health and safety policy is made up of three documents:
Policy statement document
This covers the overall policy approach for health and safety, which will be endorsed by the Chief Executive and Leader of the council.

Where a health and safety policy requires additional policy documentation (such as for technical subjects or more specialist areas), additional policies, corporate guidance and corporate templates will be developed and made available.
The policy applies to:
- people working for the council - employees, other workers and third parties
- our elected members
- other persons on council premises - including members of public, visitors, contractors, our partners who are hosted in council buildings
The policy is the foundation of how we manage health and safety, and identifies who is responsible for doing what. As the council has more than five employees, we are legally obliged to have a health and safety policy; we are also obliged to bring this to everyone’s attention.
