Taking action on anti-social behaviour

Positive legal action is continuing to be taken to reduce anti-social behaviour on estates across Chesterfield.

Over recent months, enforcement officers from Chesterfield Borough Council’s housing management team have been working closely with Derbyshire Constabulary officers to take necessary action and prevent unwanted behaviours across the borough.

Over the past six months, the council has secured court approval to issue four Mandatory Notices Seeking Possession following persistent reports from residents of drug‑related anti‑social behaviour, suspected dealing, and continuous noise nuisance.

These notices, which resulted in eviction, were served at properties in Sidmouth Court, Newbold Moor; Chertsey Close, Grangewood; Mercaston Close, Holme Hall; and Rosewood Close, Dunston, where tenants had been linked to harassment, violence, and other abusive conduct.

In addition to these cases, the courts have granted a further two Possession Orders in response to continued anti‑social behaviour at other addresses in the borough, and the council is now progressing with the eviction process for those tenants.

Throughout 2025, the council also issued 23 Notices of Seeking Possession to tenants whose behaviour was causing disruption within their communities. These notices mark the first formal stage in the legal process to end a tenancy and regain possession of a property.

In December 2025, council officers applied for a Civil Injunction against an individual residing in a council property on Hilltop Road, Old Whittington, following repeated incidents of verbal abuse, intimidation, and threats of harm towards neighbours. The court subsequently granted a 12‑month injunction, including a power of arrest, prohibiting the individual from entering Hilltop Road, contacting victims, or engaging in any threatening, harassing, or abusive behaviour towards residents or council staff. Breaching a civil injunction carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment or an unlimited fine.

Councillor Jean Innes, cabinet member for housing at Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “We want to make sure that everyone feels comfortable in their own homes and local area and we will not tolerate anti-social behaviour in our communities.

“We’re really grateful for the hard work of our housing officers who have worked closely with the police to take this action and prevent any further distress for concerned neighbours. We hope that this will act as a warning to others that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated, and we will take action when needed.

“If you have witnessed or suspect that anti-social behaviour is happening in your local area, I strongly urge you to report it as soon as possible to allow our team to investigate and take appropriate action. Please be assured that we will not tell anyone that you have reported an issue and we will not use the information you have provided without your permission.”
