Thousands of people headed into Chesterfield yesterday as the town centre was transported back in time at the popular 1940s market – a highlight of the town’s event calendar each year.
The beloved 1940s Market returned to the town on Thursday 28 May, bringing vintage entertainment, music and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Visitors were greeted by a full size replica Spitfire taking pride of place in the Market Square – helping to mark 90 years since the aircraft’s historic first flight.
Classic cars and a host of wartime displays once again filled the town centre, and with live music, dancing and street performances on offer all day, there was something for everyone to enjoy - and the town centre was bustling with people of all ages.
Traders on the popular flea market also competed to be named ‘best dressed trader’ in the annual friendly competition. This year saw Mr and Mrs Taylor crowned the winner.
Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The 1940s market is a highlight of our events calendar each year and something we know many residents and visitors look forward too – and this year didn’t disappoint!
“It was fantastic to see the town centre packed with people of all ages enjoying entertainment, socialising and supporting our fantastic local businesses.
“The recent revitalisation of New Square and Market Square has created the perfect space for people to come together - and with lots more exciting events planned this summer, we can’t wait to see even more people come along and enjoy themselves right in the heart of Chesterfield.”

This event was delivered by Chesterfield Borough Council thanks to support from by the Chesterfield Town Board Pride in Place programme, which is funded by the UK Government.
Dominic Staniforth, local business leader and Chair of Chesterfield Town Board, said: “Through our engagement with residents, it was highlighted that hosting more events in the town centre was something that local people really wanted to see - and that is why we decided to invest Pride in Place funding to help deliver the town’s entertainment programme for the next two years.
“As always, the 1940s Market was a huge success and it was great to see so many people enjoying themselves. With plenty more fantastic days planned for the town centre too, I’m looking forward to seeing lots more people coming along and experiencing what Chesterfield has to offer.”
