Chesterfield Borough Council’s latest Climate Change Annual Report has been approved at Cabinet this week (15 July 2025).
The report reflects on both challenges and achievements over the last 12-months, as well as looking ahead to 2026.
The council’s Climate Change Action Plan was developed and undertaken during 2019-2023 which led to a reduction in the organisation’s emissions by about one third.
Our seven-year strategy (2023-2030) commits the council to putting climate change at the centre of everything we do. The strategy sets out six themes for our activities during this period including buildings and energy use, travel, green space, engagement and training, data monitoring and partnership activity.
Councillor Martin Stone, councillor for climate change, planning and environment, said: “As a council we continue to positively engage with our communities by facilitating the Chesterfield Climate Change Forum and by offering support to local voluntary groups, charities and non-profits to apply and secure grant funding through the Community Grants Fund.
“In recent years we have seen flooding, heatwaves and storms that have had a devastating impact in Chesterfield, the UK, and across the world. Adjusting to changing weather patterns and preparing for the projected increase, frequency and intensity of extreme weather events presents a challenging time for councils, businesses and communities which need to be addressed sooner rather than later.
“In Chesterfield we are committed to planning for the future, and we are continuing to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions across key services aiming to be a carbon neutral authority by 2030.”
