Electric vehicles introduced to council fleet

More than 30 electric vehicles have been added to Chesterfield Borough Council’s fleet - marking positive progress towards decarbonising its fleet as part of its wider climate change commitments.

The council has entered a long-term lease for 34 fully electric vehicles – including vans and cars, that will be used to deliver building cleaning, environmental protection, Chesterfield Careline and other housing services.

Councillor Martin Stone, cabinet member for climate change, planning and the environment, said: “We are delighted to introduce the new electric vehicles to our fleet.

“We previously had five electric vehicles to deliver council services, so we are really pleased that we will see a big increase in the number of zero-emission council vehicles on the road and being used to deliver essential services for our communities.

“This is a key step towards reaching our goal of becoming a carbon neutral organisation by 2030.”

The roll out of more zero-emission vehicles comes with other bonuses too, including fewer breakdowns and repairs, spreading out the fleet management workload over time and reducing the amount of carbon per mile.

Charging points have also been installed at the council’s Stonegravels Depot to ensure the smooth transition to electric vehicles.
