The UK government will be testing the Emergency Alerts system again on Sunday 7 September 2025 at 3pm.
The Emergency Alerts system is used to warn if there’s a danger to life nearby, including extreme weather. Regular testing ensures the system is functioning correctly, should it need to be used in a life-threatening emergency.
As part of the test on Sunday 7 September, all compatible mobile phones and tablets will receive an alert, make a loud siren-like sound and vibrate. The alert message will confirm this is a test and that you do not need to take any further action.
Reasons you might get a real alert
You may get alerts about any type of life-threatening emergency, such as:
- wildfires
- severe flooding
- extreme storms
There are simple and effective steps you can take to be more prepared for an emergency in your area.
Please note that emergency alerts will only be sent by:
- the emergency services
- government departments, agencies and public bodies that deal with emergencies

You can opt out of the Emergency Alerts, including the national test, but you should keep them switched on for your own safety.
However, we appreciate there will be some cases where people do need to opt out. For example, victims of domestic abuse with a concealed phone may find it appropriate to turn off alerts.
How you opt out depends on your device. Find out more.
