Fun for the whole family at Chesterfield Glow Up

Twist and Shout is a unique light show that will be projected on to the Market Hall

Residents and visitors are invited to come together and celebrate the completion of the multi‑million‑pound transformation of Chesterfield Markets - with a brand‑new event set to illuminate the town centre.

Chesterfield Glow Up, on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 March, will mark the end of the major regeneration works with an evening of vibrant entertainment, family‑friendly activities, and a spectacular centrepiece light show.

At the heart of the Chesterfield Borough Council-run event is ‘Twist and Shout’ — an immersive projection artwork that will light up the Market Hall.

Created by internationally acclaimed projection artists Illuminos, the installation forms part of the council’s Animate Chesterfield programme and promises a striking visual experience for all ages.

To complement the show there will be live music from local musicians, excellent street entertainers, free craft workshops, UV face painting, and a night market.

A giant 35m observation wheel will be in New Square and will stay in the Square for three weeks after the event. During Chesterfield Glow Up it will be joined by other fun fair rides including a classic carousel and vintage helter-skelter.

There will also be a selection of food and drink, with a Bus Bar in the main Market Square.

The event not only celebrates the refurbishment of Chesterfield Markets but also showcases the versatility of the newly-designed market squares — demonstrating how these revitalised spaces can host vibrant events that draw more visitors into the town centre.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “This event is a fantastic way to mark a major milestone in the regeneration of our Market and to welcome people back into a space that has been completely transformed. We’re bringing a brilliant mix of entertainment and activities that will appeal to all ages.

“We’re especially excited to showcase the stunning projection light show — a truly dazzling experience that will make highlight how our renewed town centre is place for people to come together and share new experiences.”

Illuminos have created ‘Twist and Shout’ and it will be shown from 7pm until the event ends on a loop on both evenings.

Rob Vale, founder of Illuminos, said: "We’re so excited to be developing Twist and Shout in Chesterfield. Growing up in Matlock, I attended Chesterfield College Art Foundation course, and it was fundamental in shaping me as an artist. Coming full circle and working with today’s Foundation Students is really special and hopefully gives them ideas for their own creative journeys.

“The piece involves their work becoming a direct part of the projection mapping, asking them to imagine objects, elements and moments relevant to them and their connection to the town, then giving them a unique and creative ’twist’. Combined with the ringing ’shouts’ of the market sellers, performed for us by community participants, we hope to bring a one of a kind celebration of Chesterfield’s spirit and energy, which like its iconic spire, always has a twist.”

Glow Up Chesterfield has been part funded from the Mayor of the East Midlands and East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) from funding provided by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “Chesterfield Glow Up is a fantastic way to bring the community together and celebrate the town’s market transformation.”

“The projection art, live music, and family activities will make the town centre a hub of energy and creativity, with local artists adding their own unique touch.”

“Events like this revitalise our public spaces, strengthen pride in place, and give residents and visitors a chance to connect and enjoy Chesterfield’s culture.”

Animate Chesterfield is a programme of public art which will create artworks and activates through the regeneration programmes happening in both Chesterfield and Staveley.

Funding for this public art project was secured through planning agreements as part of the council’s percent for art scheme, which was part of the previous Local Plan (and now continues a voluntary basis), and the funding must be used for the delivery of public art.
