Subscriptions for the garden waste collection service are now open.
Residents can sign up to the service from today to receive fortnightly green bin collections for twelve months from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.
The service is chargeable, with this year’s cost being £43.
If you require an additional garden waste bin, this will be charged at a reduced rate of £18 per bin and can be requested by contacting the council directly.
Garden waste bins can be used for a range of compostable materials, including grass cuttings, leaves, twig, flowers and hedge trimmings.
The garden waste collected is taken to an approved composting facility, helping to increase recycling across the borough.
From April 2026, food waste will no longer be accepted in the garden waste bin. This change is in line with new government legislation requiring councils to collect food waste separately from other waste streams. The council will therefore be introducing new free weekly food waste collections, and more details will be shared nearer the time.
Residents who subscribe between 2 February and 8 March 2026 will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a free year of garden waste collections. Four winners will be selected at random each week until the closing date.
Councillor Martin Stone, councillor for climate change, planning and environment, said: “I encourage as many residents as possible to register for the garden waste service.
“Recycling garden waste through the council’s collection scheme is far better for the environment than disposal by other means.
“Using the service also reduces the need for trips to the household recycling centre and helps to cut greenhouse gas emissions.”
