Improved play space brings joy to local schoolchildren

A play space in Duckmanton has welcomed its first visitors following a major transformation.

Children from Duckmanton Primary School visited the improved play space on Monday 6 July following a major transformation by Chesterfield Borough Council.

Around 140 children from the school visited the play space to try out the new equipment. When designing the park children from the school were asked about the type of equipment they would like to see included.

The play space on West Crescent in Duckmanton has been transformed with tree works, refurbishment of seating areas and new equipment including two new climbing frames, refurbished swings, play panels, a see saw, springy rockers, balance beams, a swing ride and more.

The upgraded space is designed for children from 2 to 12 and includes improved seating for parents.

Councillor Martin Stone, Chesterfield Borough Councils cabinet member for climate change, planning and the environment, said: “Creating inviting play spaces to provide local families with fantastic outdoor spaces where they can spend time together is a priority for the council and its fantastic that we could get these works completed in time for the summer holidays.

“Spaces like this encourage children to be active, make new friends and have fun, something that will help ensure this a great place to live for many years to come. Thank you to all the children from Duckmanton Primary School who helped us to design the new play space and then visited to give it their seal of approval.”

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “I have been so pleased to be able to provide this funding. Safe and engaging play spaces support children in getting active outdoors while having fun.

"I’m especially pleased that the children from the local primary school were asked what they would like their improved play space to look like. I hope that many happy memories are made here, and that local families get to make the most of it!”

The works in Duckmanton play space received £34,000 from the Mayor of the East Midlands and East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) from funding provided by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) to pay for the refurbishment, as well as £50,000 Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding.

CIL money is used to support necessary development by funding infrastructure that the council local community and neighbourhoods have identified through the Local Plan, such as park improvements amongst other projects.
