Easter is a great time to spend time with family and friends, as well as indulging in a few sweet treats, but don’t forget you can recycle lots of your Easter waste in your bins at home.
Reducing, reusing and recycling are important all year round so why not think about how you can reduce the number of items you are buying that could be wasted such as extra hot cross buns or Easter Eggs, reuse wrapping paper and cards for other occasions and recycle anything you can at home in your blue recycling bin.
You can also add food waste into your green bin (if you subscribe to the garden waste service).
Here is our guide to 10 things you can recycle or reuse at home this Easter:
1. Cardboard Easter Egg boxes, ensure they are flattened and contain no food waste – add to your blue bin or use for future children’s craft activities
2. Plastic Easter Egg holders – ensure they are clean and add in to your blue bin
3. Greetings cards – these could be cut into smaller shapes and used as present labels for birthdays and Christmas
4. Foil packaging can be added to your blue bin
5. Food packaging such as biscuit tins could be re-used to store other household items in such as cakes or other dried goods
6. Freeze excess food like hot cross buns (if it is safe to do so)
7. Put flowers that you’ve purchased into your garden waste bin (if you subscribe to the service) or use them to create compost at home with other waste products you have
8. Unwanted dress up items such as Easter bonnets, baskets to carry eggs in or other Easter-based costumes – could be given to friends or family to use another time, or pass them on to a charity shop
9. Wrapping paper – could be reused for another occasion, or if you remove any cellotape, bows and glitter it can be added into your blue bin to be recycled
10. Unwanted chocolate – could be melted down and used to make cake decorations or corn flake / rice crispy cakes.
