Theft in Staveley town centre

The theft left the statue seriously damaged.

A break in at the Staveley town centre regeneration project has caused damage to the statue and the theft of tools and copper.

On Monday 3 November thieves used a vehicle to smash through the fencing, it appears that they then tied a rope around the statue and used their vehicle to pull it over. This has caused damage to the clock and base. Bronze relief plaques which showed scenes from Staveley’s industrial heritage were also removed from the site.

The thieves also stole copper from the new building and attempted to steal power tools. CCTV has provided some details about the incident but anyone with information about the theft is being asked to contact Derbyshire Police.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “This is a shocking incident and something that we cannot tolerate in our community. It has seriously damaged a local landmark which depicted Staveley’s proud industrial history. We would appreciate the public’s help to locate the bronze plaques from the statue and catch those responsible.

“We will restore the statue as part of the regeneration project, this includes fixing the base, reattaching the bronze statues and the clock but it will be very difficult to replicate the bronze plaques.”

Inspector Josh Carter, who leads policing in the area, said: “The mining and engineering heritage is something that Staveley is rightly proud of, and to have this damage committed to a statue that celebrates that industrial past is something that is deeply upsetting.

“While we have a number of lines of enquiry in our investigation, we would be very keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident taking place – in particular anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage.”
