Chesterfield Borough Council believes that effective Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) is an important tool in tackling crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour.
CCTV was initially introduced in Chesterfield in 1995 principally as a regeneration initiative.
The service has been significantly extended throughout the years to encompass the principal shopping and entertainment areas of the town and other out-of-town areas, namely Staveley, Brimington and Hasland, as well as cameras at the neighbourhood shopping centres of Littlemoor and Loundsley Green, and latterly within residential areas to combat incidents of anti-social behaviour.
The service currently comprises 99 cameras (73 PTZ’s, pan, tilt and zoom, and 26 fixed cameras). The service does provide a monitoring service for commercial clients and the total number of cameras currently monitored is 138.
The control centre is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and currently handles around 9,000 incidents a year.
The control centre is equipped with Police Airwaves Radio and has direct video and telephone link to Derbyshire Constabulary’s force control room. The control centre operations are undertaken in accordance with the Information Commissioners CCTV Code of Practice. The service is accredited to ISO 9001:2008 and all operators are licensed by the Security Industry Authority to undertake Public Space CCTV Surveillance.
The CCTV service is a significant partner in the Chesterfield Community Safety Partnership and the town’s Shopwatch and Pubwatch schemes. These schemes link town centre retailers and licensees with the Control Centre and the Police via radio handsets.
To assist in the above, members of the public should always report any incidents of criminal or anti-social behaviour to the police, who will then contact the council’s CCTV service as required.

Procedure for the release of CCTV evidence
Information relating to CCTV images is normally only released to the police. However, if you would like to make a request for specific information please contact the council's freedom of information officer.
