Chesterfield Borough Council no longer provides a local land charges search service.
Our local land charges register has migrated to HM Land Registry’s national register. You can access the new digital service through the HM Land Registry portal, the Business Gateway and on Gov.uk.
Chesterfield Borough Council will continue to provide replies to Con29 enquiries - please only submit the required fee of £117.40 when submitting a CON29 enquiry to us.

A local land charge is a restriction on a piece of land or property, that can limit its use, and be binding on successive owners.
Local land charges can be placed on a property by an ‘originating authority’, such as a local authority, environmental agency, or water authority, English Heritage, or the Highways Agency.
When buying a property or piece of land, it is important that a local land charges search is carried out to make sure there are no issues affecting the land or property.
Local land charges searches are made in two parts: LLC1 and CON29.
LLC1 local land charges searches
The LLC1 certificate reveals all local land charges entries on the HM Land Registry national register, such as:
- financial charges
- tree preservation orders
- conservation areas
- conditional planning consents
- improvement grants
These searches are carried out by HM Land Registry – you can access the digital service through the HM Land Registry portal, the Business Gateway and on Gov.uk.
CON29 searches
The CON29 search is made up of two parts – required information (CON29R) and optional information (CON29O).
The CON29R (required) search reveals issues such as:
- who maintains the road the property is on
- the planning history of the property
- the building control history of the property
- traffic schemes
- compulsory purchase orders
- proposed tree preservation orders
- other notices that may affect the property
Optional information can be provided through a CON29O (optional) search, such as:
- road proposals
- public footpaths
- common land and village greens
Additional information can be specifically requested such as:
- development proposals within 200 metres of your property.
Solicitors normally contact us to carry out the search; we will collate the information from different departments and bring it together into one search.
CON29 searches are carried out by the local authority that covers the location of the property.
