Our Growth Strategy sets out the role of the council in supporting the growth and regeneration of Chesterfield borough.
It provides a framework for actions over the period 2026 to 2030 that will deliver the Council’s ambition for Chesterfield to be a thriving, resilient and forward looking borough.
The development of the strategy has been under-pinned by a detailed assessment of the local economy which is available in the supporting documents section below.
It builds on the success of previous growth strategies which have seen the creation of thousands of new jobs in the local economy, along with record levels of regeneration and investment across the borough.
The strategy includes five key objectives, which are:
- help businesses to grow and secure new business investment in the borough
- build a competitive place infrastructure that accelerates employment and housing growth
- strengthen the distinctive character and vibrancy of our town centres
- develop Chesterfield’s role as a visitor destination and as a base for exploring the surrounding area
- ensure local people have the right skills to support progression in the labour market and benefit from future employment opportunities
Within each of these objectives a range of key activities have been identified which will help ensure that the ambitious aims of the strategy can be achieved.
For example, it commits the council to working in partnership with businesses and skills providers to ensure that local people can access support programmes which will help them advance their career and continuing initiatives like local labour clauses on major planning applications which ensures that communities can benefit from new development.
The strategy aims to build on major regeneration projects like Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield with organising more events to attract visitors, continuing investment in the town centre and working with Chesterfield Town Board, part of the Government’s Pride in Place programme, and East Midlands Combined County Authority to identify and realise new opportunities like the East Midlands Investment Zone.
It includes support for businesses such as the provision of an Innovation Support Programme and a commercial property advice service for people looking for business premises.
A key focus of the strategy is enhancement of the visitor economy through marketing activities to raise the profile of Chesterfield, a programme of speciality markets, events and festivals and working with partners to improve the visitor offer.
This strategy is about making the most of the opportunities available for the benefit of local people and businesses and provides continuity and direction during a time of significant change in Local Government.
