We have appointed Whittam Cox Architects and Planit-IE to provide a vision for the Northern Gateway area.
The Northern Gateway scheme includes the development of the former Co-op department store and a new enterprise centre on part of the Holywell Cross (Donut) car park.
Aimed at helping more local businesses to grow, it will complement the council’s innovation centres at Dunston and Tapton Park. Proposed public realm improvements to Elder Way aim to breathe new life in to this area making it a vibrant place for leisure, retail and social gathering. The redevelopment of the Saltergate multi-storey car park is a key feature of the scheme.
The Northern Gateway project is funded by a Sheffield City Region Infrastructure Fund grant of £5.83 million.
The council has contributed £6.5 million to the scheme with the Co-op redevelopment being paid for by the private sector.
Chesterfield based Whittam Cox Architects has prepared a vision document for the council which demonstrates how the Northern Gateway and surrounding areas could come forward for development in the future.
This follows extensive analysis of the area, which has drawn on the outcome of a review of the town centre masterplan, stakeholder consultation and area analyses. Design principles for each of four character areas identified within Northern Gateway Area, namely Holywell Cross, Newbold Road, Elder Way and Knifesmithgate, Station Approach have been identified.
These principles have then been applied to illustrate how the future development of each of these character areas could look. These illustrations set a benchmark to the town’s aspirations and a means by which to stimulate development and investor interest in this part of the town centre.
Proposals contained in the vision do not attempt to stifle any alternative proposals, but give a picture of how successful regeneration in this area could look.
