Selling your right to buy property

When you buy a 'right to buy' property, there are terms in the contract that may affect you if you decide to sell it at a later date.

Within ten years

If you decide to sell your home within ten years of buying it from the council, you must offer it back to us first. We have the 'right of first refusal', and will decide if we want to buy it back from you. If we decide not to buy the property you can sell it on the open market as normal.

Within five years

If it's less than five years since you bought your council home, as well as offering us first refusal you will have to pay back some of the discount you received when you bought it.

The amount you have to pay back will depend on how many years have passed since you bought the property, and the property’s current sale valuation.

More than ten years since you bought your council home?

If ten years have passed since you bought your property, you do not need to repay any of the discount or offer the property back to us.
