Tackling anti-social behaviour in Chesterfield Town Centre

Positive action has been taken to reduce unwanted behaviour in Chesterfield Town Centre.

Following reports from residents, visitors and local businesses about anti-social behaviour and street drinking in the Market Place, Chesterfield Borough Council’s community safety team has launched a robust approach to tackle the issues raised.

Working closely with partner agencies, the team undertook extensive evidence gathering and have taken enforcement action against individuals responsible for ASB. This included:

  • Regular street patrols
  • The use of Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs)
  • Issuing Community Protection Warnings (CPWs) and Community Protection Notices(CPNs)
  • Utilising CCTV and body worn footage to support enforcement action
  • Producing detailed court files that resulted in over 10 civil injunctions being granted, many with powers of arrest and strict exclusion zones from the town centre (PSPO)

These efforts have had a significant and visible impact on the town centre. The individuals who were causing the most disruption are no longer present in the town centre and businesses have reported improvements in the area.

Councillor Steve Lismore, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “Chesterfield is a safe, secure and pleasant place to live and work, and we want to ensure that every resident and visitor to Chesterfield continues to be protected from crime, harassment, and disturbance.

“Working collaboratively, our community safety team and the police are doing all they can to stop antisocial behaviour in our community and remain committed to ensuring Chesterfield is a safe and vibrant place for everyone.

The action that has been taken against these offenders is a great achievement for the team and I thank them for their efforts.”
