The popular 1940s Market is back on 10 April, bringing a range of free entertainment to Chesterfield town centre for the whole family to enjoy.
Come along and see the town transported back to the 1940s with a variety of music, street performances and period dress.
Taking place throughout the town centre from 10am to 4pm, the Chesterfield Borough Council-run event takes place during the Easter school holidays and will happen alongside the popular weekly Thursday flea market.
Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The 1940s Market includes a range of free fantastic entertainment, that is always enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
“We encourage you to put the date in your diary early, so you don’t miss out.”
Below are 10 things you can look out for at the market this year:
- See the Kalamazoo Dance Band in Rykneld Square at regular intervals from 11am to 3.15pm
- The Daisy Belles – see the singers on Burlington Street at intervals between 10.15am and 2.15pm
- See the display of classic cars, vintage fire engine and military vehicles in the Market Place throughout the event
- Watch an escape artist and glass walker in the Market Place at regular intervals between 10.45am and 3.25pm
- Laurel and Hardy Magicians will be performing in the Market Place from 11am to 4pm
- A Walkabout Pilot will entertain visitors in the Market Place at regular intervals from 12 noon to 2.30pm with his magnificent ‘flying machine’ complete with a six-foot wingspan, a loud onboard sound system, and a penny farthing for an undercarriage
- Have your photo taken in the cockpit of a replica Hurricane plane situated in the Market Place throughout the day
- A Mini Soldiers Camp will be set up near the Crooked Spire Church from 10am to 4pm with a show and tell of soldiers in Germany on VE Day and kids will be able to take part in soldier drills at regular intervals throughout the day
- A 1940s mining display will be on show from 10am to 4pm in the Market Place
- Enjoy performances from a variety of 1940s style singers across the town including, Natasha Harper, Kyle Evans, Jayne Darling and Johnny Victory
Visitors will also be able to see new singers Viva La Vintage in the Market Hall and Lady Lindy in The Shambles – at times throughout the day.
