Chesterfield Climate Change Forum will be marking the annual climate summit.
On Friday November 15, members of the forum will be hosting an information stall on Chesterfield Market, where you can see exactly how much greenhouse gas is emitted in Chesterfield and what is being done reduce these emissions. You will also be able to find out what things you can do that will help reduce emissions.
The stall will bring together members of the forum together with representatives from local community groups including Chesterfield Climate Alliance.
This event will take place during the annual climate summit COP29 in Baku Azerbaijan where all the countries of the world come together to discuss what needs to be achieved on a global scale. A major concern at this summit should be the devastation and suffering already caused and mostly affecting those who have done the least to cause the crisis.
Chesterfield Climate Alliance will be joining the Climate Justice Coalition’s call for a fairer, better future.
This will be the third COP which has been marked in Chesterfield. In 2015 when COP 21 famously produced the Paris Agreement to keep global heating to 1.5 degrees above preindustrial levels, activists marched through the town with a model Eiffel Tower and Chesterfield Climate Alliance was formed. In 2021 when COP26 was held in Glasgow Chesterfield greeted people walking to the summit, welcoming them with food and song. Toby Perkins MP and Councillor Amanda Serjeant the deputy leader of the council made speeches outside the Crooked Spire.
Paul King who represents the churches on Chesterfield Climate Forum said: “Every year COP brings home the desperate state of the world. Climate change is already wreaking havoc. I am glad we are doing something here in Chesterfield to galvanise action.”
Stephanie Futcher from Chesterfield Climate Alliance said: “At last we are finding ways to work together on this crisis. This stall is the beginning of a new relationship between the Borough Council and local climate activists.”
Chesterfield Climate Change Forum is a group organised by Chesterfield Borough Council that aims to bring together community representatives who can help the council engage more effectively with partners in the wider community and serve as a sounding board for actions the council plans to take to reduce emissions.
Councillor Martin Stone, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for climate change, planning and the environment, said: “Events like these are really important because it will help more people understand what they can do to reduce their emissions and provide key information about local sources of emissions. We formed the Forum not only to help the council in our target to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2030 but also support wider community engagement and I’m proud that we can support events like this.”
