By-elections and councillor vacancies

A local by-election happens when a councillor position becomes vacant between scheduled elections.

Here we will post notices for councillor vacancies and by-elections for Chesterfield Borough Council, Staveley Town Council, Brimington Parish Council or Derbyshire County Council.


Staveley by-elections 7 May 2026

By-elections will be held on Thursday 7 May 2026 for the following vacancies:

  • Chesterfield Borough Council - Staveley North ward (two seats)
  • Staveley Town Council - Woodthorpe ward (one seat)

Nomination period  

Nomination papers must be delivered to the Returning Officer between 10am and 4pm on any working day from Tuesday 31 March 2026 until Thursday 9 April 2026. Please email the elections team on elections@chesterfield.gov.uk to book an appointment.

Important dates for these by-elections:

Registering to vote - in order to vote in these by-elections on Thursday 7 May 2026, you must be registered to vote.

If you’re not already registered, please do so before midnight on Monday 20 April. Register to vote here

Postal voting - if you wish to vote by post and don't already have a postal vote in place, you must apply before 5pm on Tuesday 21 April. Apply for a postal vote here.

If you believe you have a postal vote in place and have not received it by Thursday 30 April, please contact the elections team on 01246 936929 or 936861.

Voting by proxy - any elector can request a proxy vote which involves arrangements being made for someone to vote at your polling station on your behalf. The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is 5pm on Tuesday 28 April.

Voter identification - voters must show an approved form of photo ID to vote in a polling station. If you don’t already have an accepted form of ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline to apply is 5pm on Tuesday 28 April. Apply for a Voter Authority Certificate here.

If you need someone to vote on your behalf in an emergency, you must apply by 5pm on Thursday 7 May.
