General election July 2024

A parliamentary 'general' election will take place on Thursday 4 July 2024.

During a general election, voters select one candidate to be their MP and serve in the House of Commons for their constituency. The candidate who gets the most votes becomes the MP for that constituency until the next election.

North East Derbyshire constituency

The following electoral wards do not fall under the Chesterfield parliamentary constituency, residents of these wards will vote to elect the MP for North East Derbyshire:

  • Staveley North
  • parts of Staveley Central (Polling District KA5)
  • parts of Whittington (Polling Districts OA2 and OA3)

Register to vote in this election

To vote at this election your name must appear on the register of electors. 

You can register to vote online, all you will need is your National Insurance Number, or you can complete a paper form and return it to our elections team. Find out more about registering to vote.

The last date to register to vote for this election is Tuesday 18 June 2024

You don’t need to register again if you’ve already registered to vote.


Voting by post or proxy

If you would like to vote by post, you must apply by 5pm on Wednesday 19 June.

You can apply either online or by submitting a paper form to our elections team.

A proxy vote is when you arrange for someone to vote on your behalf and any elector can request a proxy vote, provided they give a reason. If you wish to use a proxy vote you must apply by 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.

If you have a medical emergency six days or less before the election you can apply for an emergency proxy vote up to 5pm on polling day.

Voter photo identification

You will need to show photo identification before you can vote in person at a polling station on Thursday 4 July.

There are lots of different forms of photo ID that will be accepted, including driving licence, Passport, Blue Badge, PASS card, older persons bus pass and more.

If you do not have photographic ID you will need to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate by 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.

A Voter Authority Certificate is a document containing an elector’s name and photograph which can be obtained free of charge.
